Fall 2023 Inclusive Fashion Trends Report

Fall has officially arrived in 2023, and for those of us who revel in the cooler temperatures and cozy fashion choices, this is quite possibly the best time of year. Personally, I’ve always struggled to enjoy fall since I’ve always lived in climates where fall weather either doesn’t exist or lasts only a few weeks before diving into winter. However, the fashion is something I LOVE. It may be reserved for only a few weeks or enjoying it on others on Instagram, but when I tell you fall is the season of fashion, it IS the most fashionable time of year.

When researching trends for this fall I was particularly excited as I believe this season has the most wearable trends of any fall I’ve seen in the past years. One of the themes is literally wearability that the F/W 23 runways confirmed themselves. A lot of the time the fashion industry feels a bit out of touch for the everyday woman like us, however our trend reports (like always) focus on the most wearable trends for a more realistic overview of what you should be buying this season, and luckily, the runways agree.

Check out exactly what is trending for this fall season to start refreshing your wardrobe and your outlook on your closet! If you’re looking for a more comprehensive trend report for the entire 2023 year, you can check out our 2023 inclusive fashion trends report, including overall themes for the year like re-using and re-styling your closet and menswear for women.

Themes

Unconventional Shapes

I had to start this fall fashion trend report off by raving about my favorite trend of the season - unconventional shapes. There’s nothing that can elevate a look to uniqueness AND fun quite like an unconventional wardrobe staple. Most people would think of oddly shaped bags, however, this is being seen in multiple ways, including in pants, shoes, even accessories. If you want to play around with your fashion this season, this is the place to start.

Power dressing

Don’t you just love it when a “trend” can also be a staple in your wardrobe all year long for years to come? Well, you’re looking at one now! Power dressing can also be called “businesswoman chic” because of its focus on workplace attire. However, this “version” of the trend that’s going to be everywhere this season really focuses on sinched waists, strong shoulders, and fitted bottoms. Think business but with a sexy twist.

This trend from our 2023 inclusive trend report is coming in hot! We’re seeing a new take on denim everywhere on the streets, from patchwork on pants to cropped and deconstructed jackets. This is one trend you’ll find all year long, tailored toward the different seasons.

Wearability

Now you may be thinking that fashion and wearability don’t go together, but hear me out… the industry is shifting! Even the high fashion industry is incorporating ready-to-wear pieces in their high fashion shows (looking at you Miu Miu!) If one thing is proven by this is that designers are recognizing the shift in culture that is advocating for pieces that don’t just meet our fashion expectations, but are essentially seasonless and can be repurposed year after year. If you’re still wondering what this means, also think “clean girl”, “quiet luxury” or “stealth wealth” as prime examples of this trend. This trend focuses directly on pieces like basics (tanks, jackets, pants) and applying them to fit an overall clean and easily wearable look.

Products

Button downs

Speaking of quiet luxury! One thing that has sparked onto the scene is the resurgence of button-downs. This is the perfect opportunity to repurpose those button-downs you most likely invested in during the summer. Either wear it alone, layer it over a tank for a bit more coverage, or wear it open and layer a blazer or cardigan on top to pick up the prep or power in your look. There are several ways you can style a button-down top, which makes it perfect as a trend to easily take you from season to season.

Midi / Maxi skirts

Maxi skirts were a huge part of spring fashion and temporarily dropped off in the summer, most likely due to the heat. However, for fall, it’s the perfect time to bust them out again as you can now pair them with those fall boots I know you’ve been waiting to bust out. However, midi skirts are long considered a staple for fall and are coming back stronger than ever. Transition easily into fall with a midi skirt paired with your favorite long-sleeve top or sweater and you’ll easily be the trendiest one on the scene.

Trench coats

There’s never been a better time to bust out more coats than fall! When you encounter the whole “too cold in the morning but too warm in the afternoon” weather, throwing a trench coat over your fall outfit fixes that problem instantly! One trend that has evolved is the incorporation of a hooded trench coat (or call it a raincoat if you must!) Hoods are totally in with this season's trench coats, however, a long-line coat with a waist tie to accentuate your figure can be a nice alternative if you’re not a hooded girl.

Scoop neck tanks

Bring this back to the wearability factor trend and you’ll easily find a plethora of scoop neck tanks on display at your favorite store. The key to investing in a scoop neck tank for fall is the fabric you choose. In the fashion world and on the runways we’ve seen more lightweight fabrics including silk/satin as well as light weight modals for a looser feel to your tank. This is a personal favorite as they’re perfect for year-round wear and transition perfectly into fall no matter what the weather.

Tailored trousers

If there’s one thing that’s for certain is that we have seen tailored trousers pop up on almost every trend report we’ve done. Everyone is absolutely loving tailored trousers and I don’t blame them. They’re easy to throw on, comfortable, and instantly elevate a look to classic chic (and the power dressing trend is easy to achieve!). Not to mention since they’ve been on trend for so long, many retailers have perfected their fits and came out with a variety of different styles so it will be easy to find a pair that fits you well and you absolutely love.

Colors

Red

A power color that has lit up the fashion world all year! Since the debut of this fiery color all over the runway at NYFW F/W 23’ back in February last year, we’re truly seeing red everywhere. To me, this color screams confidence, so if you want to feel good and command your wardrobe, this is the color to invest in.

Brown hues

Browns are something we see roll around the fall season every year, but this year it’s different. We’re seeing more and more shades of brown pop into wardrobes everywhere as some may enjoy if they’re into the “sad beige” aesthetic as well. This is a personal favorite because brown is a color that truly works for everyone, as well as going with almost every other color out there (minus yellow… that combo is a bit rough IMO). Find your signature shade and rock it multiple different ways!

White

There’s nothing better than a crisp white shirt, bright white sneakers or an off-white bag. And lucky for us, those are things we’re seeing everywhere this fall. To go along with the mention above of “wearability” and “quiet luxury” there are many ways to make white a pop of (non) color to your outfit or even the main character of your look. Forget no white after Labor Day, we threw that idea out a decade ago. Pull out your favorite white pieces and go for it!

Textures

Metallics

This should be nothing new as we’ve seen the metallic craze all year. But if you need some convincing, Beyonce did ask all her fans to dress in their finest metals and light up her arenas like disco balls during Virgo season at her current Renaissance world tour (which, yes I went to and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen!). So if Beyonce is even encouraging her fans to hop on this trend? You know it’s serious!

Woven

I know we all saw the raffia craze going off this summer, however, we’re slowly seeing a transfer over of this into woven accessories. Bottega is one brand that fully embraces the woven motif, but if you’re looking for something more affordable, don’t worry. I got you right down below.

Shearling and Sherpa

Get ready to see this trend transfer over into winter. Fuzzy clothing and accessories are not only functional for the colder weather but also easy as a trend to incorporate into your outfits. Live in a cold climate? Go for a fuzzy jacket or Sherpa sweater. Preparing for milder temperatures during fall? Accessorize with a shearing cross-body bag, fuzzy gloves, ear muffs for colder days, or even footwear!

Accessories

Tote bags

An exciting addition to our fall fashion trends is the resurgence of tote bags! This trend goes hand in hand with the overall theme of wearability for fall, making it much easier to carry around your things but also stay on trend. We went from supermini bags to extra large tote bags and I couldn’t be happier about it! A few trending textures we see in bags are most certainly woven bags, leather totes as well as the staple “work bag” of simple design but optimal function.

Chunky gold jewelry

We have Bottega Veneta to blame for this one! On one of their most recent showings they essentially broke the internet with their now-viral chunky drop earrings (yes I have dupes below) and the chunky jewelry trend has been booming ever since! The most exciting way to elevate a rather basic look is to accessorize and for fall, the more chunky gold jewelry the better.

Unconventional scarves - blanket chic

Let’s end where we started with the unconventional. A new fun fashion trend is with the addition of scarves, but not your normal scarves. Fashion designers have now incorporated the feeling and look of scarves in everything from ponchos, skirts, jackets etc. giving outfits for fall a cozy and comforting look and feel. I almost decided to coin this trend as “blanket chic” but figured that would be a bit much… so feel free to enjoy the products down below and think of it as the comfort of blankets but the chicness of a trending fall scarf.
